Delaware at Six Nations of the Grand River
Ohsweken, Ontario

John “Sawatis” Moses is a member of the Delaware and Upper Mohawk bands of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. He is included here not as a tribal leader, but as a contemporary Delaware voice representing a living Lenape community that does not maintain its own separately identified chief or government.

The Delaware at Six Nations of the Grand River are a historic Lenape community living within the larger Six Nations territory in Ontario.

The Lenape are not one political body today. Their descendants live in communities across the United States and Canada, each with its own government, history, and leadership.

This page focuses on six present-day Lenape/Delaware communities with recognized governmental or longstanding community status in the United States and Canada: the Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, Stockbridge-Munsee Community, Munsee-Delaware Nation, Delaware Nation at Moraviantown, and the Delaware community at Six Nations of the Grand River.

These six were chosen deliberately. They represent the principal present-day communities descended from the historic Lenape/Delaware people and their migrations from the Lenape homeland. This website does not attempt to include every organization, heritage group, or state-recognized group that identifies as Lenape or Delaware. The distinction is not meant to determine anyone’s ancestry or identity, but to give this project a clear and historically grounded standard for whose current leadership is presented here.
